C.3 Reedbed transplantation

The transplanting of about 1000 small clumps of Phragmites australis is carried out in order to trigger and facilitate the restoration of extensive intertidal surfaces vegetated with reeds.

The transplant activities will be carried out by operators trained during the A.5.2 Action, belonging to local stakeholders (eg associations of fishermen and hunters), and under the technical supervision of the UNIVE scientific partner.

The transplant will be carried out using small sized clumps (about 15-20 cm in diameter) harvested, after administrative authorization, in lagoon areas or along freshwater courses where the reeds are well developed and their removal will not have relevant environmental impacts on the donor sites.

P. australis clumps will be transplanted in areas characterized by low salinity and water level> -0.20 m a.s.l., in a portion of the project site close to the fresh water input (C.1 Action) and where the morphological reconstruction is planned (C.2 Action). Transplants will be carried out, in particular, in areas along the margins of the existing salt marshes. Also the biodegradable structures, used for the confinement of the areas of intervention (C.2 Action), will be used as substrate for transplanting.

The Action will support the establishment of new reedbed habitats with immediate effects on ecosystem services and with rapid benefits for fish fauna, birdlife and self-purifying capacity of the system. In particular, it is expected that the reedbeds will be able to uptake nutrients that are currently introduced in the lagoon during the periodic spills from the spillway of the Sile river.
